Richard Tredgold obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham (1954) with title "A study of cooperative magnetic phenomena" and afterwards held posts in several universities. He was appointed to a chair of Physics in the University of Lancaster where he was in charge of a research group working on the formation and properties of multilayers of various organic compounds. He passed away in October 2013.
