Pieter Balk obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics at the Free University of Amsterdam in 1957. Subsequently he spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Research Laboratories in Ottawa, Canada. From 1959 to 1972 he was connected to the IBM Research Center, first at Poughkeepsie, NY, later in Yorktown Heights, where he was involved in MOSFET development and in research on insulators. Since 1972 he is Professor of Semiconductor Electronics at the Technical University of Aachen. His research interests include Si-MOSFET and III–V technology.
