Author of the teachings of the world centers of origin of cultivated plants and the immunity of plants. In Leningrad, he created the world's largest collection of plant seeds. Vavilov also formulated the law of homologous series in variation. In 1940 N. I. Vavilov was entrusted to lead a comprehensive scientific expedition to the Western regions of Belarus and Ukraine which joined the USSR in 1939, and while being there Vavilov was arrested on the basis of fabricated charges. At the age of 55 he died in the hospital of prison #1 of Saratov. In 1955 he was rehabilitated posthumously.
