Joseph Vincent McHugh was born in Brooklyn , New York on August 28 , 1962 to Dr . Thomas P . McHugh and Emily Zimmerman McHugh . As a child , his interest in the natural world was stimulated by regular trips to nearby parks along the shores of Jamaica Bay and by summer visits to the hamlet of Adirondack in the Adirondack Mountains .
In 1975 the McHugh family moved to Ticonderoga , New York , a small town in the Adirondack Park between the southern end of Lake Champlain and Lake George . Joseph graduated from Ticonderoga High School in 1980 .
Later that year , Joseph began studies at Cornell University , specializing in Entomology under the guidance of his advisor , Dr . George C . Eickwort . In 1982 he met Roxanne Santiago Reyes , a Cornell student and his future wife . He graduated from Cornell in 1984 , but remained in Ithaca to work as a technician for coleopterist Dr . Quentin D . Wheeler .
He began Master ' s Degree studies in 1986 at the University of Connecticut with a major in Evolutionary Biology , working under heteropterist Dr . James A . Slater . His research focused on the phylogenetic relationships of the family Aspidiphoridae and his thesis included a revision of the world Eurysphindinae . While doing field research he developed an interest in other mycophagous insects and in fungi . In the winter of 1986 - 87 he made his first trip to the Neotropics ( Jamaica and Peru ) with Dr . Q . D . Wheeler . A year later , he married Roxanne , graduated from the University of Connecticut , and then returned to Ithaca .
At Cornell University , he again worked as a technician with Dr . Wheeler . In 1989 he began studies toward a Ph . D . Degree with a major in systematic entomology and minor in mycology under the direction of his major advisor Dr . Wheeler . The primary focus of his dissertation research is a phylogenetic study of the family Erotylidae based on morphological features of the larval stage .
During the next few years he conducted field research in Puerto Rico ( 1990 ) , Peru ( 1990 ) , Bolivia ( 1991 ) , and Costa Rica ( 1992 ) . In the Spring of 1995 , he was offered a position as Assistant Professor of Entomology at the University of Georgia .
