Dean Norman Arden was born on October 3, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN, to Wesley and Clare Arden. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1946 with bachelor's degrees in Engineering and Mathematics, and Purdue University with a PhD in Mathematics in 1957. From 1943 to 1951, Dean served in the Marine Corps Reserve. He worked on the first real-time digital computer, the Whirlwind, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1954-1957. He was a professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT and Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and a professor and chairman of the Computer Science Department at The University at Albany, Albany, NY until he retired in 1991. He was also the president of Shenendehowa Central School School Board in Clifton Park, NY for several years.
