Born in 1945 at Churu (Rajasthan, India) with education at Churu and Kolkata (class 8 onwards).. Bachelors' (1964), Master's (1966) and Ph.D. (1970) degrees from University of Calcutta. Doctoral research related to dosage compensation in Drosophila, supervised by Prof. Ardhendu Sekhar Mukherjee (late), who did his Ph.D. under Prof. Curt Stern at California.
Subsequent research interests using the Drosophila model: heeterochromatin, chromosomal replication, gene expression, heat shock genes and their developmental roles and noncoding RNA. Current research interests on lncRNA (hsromega gene), Stress genes in tumor development and Ayurvedic Biology.
Research work carried out at University of Calcutta (Kolkata), University of Delhi, Gujarat University (Ahemdabad), Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi), Institute of Animal Genetics (Edinburgh), University of Nijmegen (Holland), MIT (USA).
Presently: Distinguished Professor (Lifelong) and SERB Distinguished Fellow at Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221 005, India
