John Habakkuk was a British economic historian (1915–2002). He was born in Yales and educated at Barry County School. He then received a first class degree in history from St. John's College, Cambridge (1936). After completing a doctorate at Oxford, he began work in government. He then returned to Oxford in 1950 where he was appointed the Chichele Professor of Economic History and Professorial Fellow of All Souls College. He was a Fellow of the British Academy, member of the American Philosophical Society, and was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1976.
