Dutch microbiologist, 1851-1931. Focus of research on soil bacteriology. A founder of virology, he demonstrated that tobacco mosaic disease was caused by a non-filterable organism. He also discovered nitrogen fixation, a process carried out by certain bacterial species in the roots of leguminous plants.
