Bio:

1914-1998. Graduated from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1942 and then joined the public health service, working in Seattle and Alaska before joining NIH in 1944. He discovered the cause of rickettsialpox, Ricketssia akari in an outbreak at a housing complex in New York City. He also discovered Coxiella burneti, the cause of Q fever after an outbreak of the disease from contaminated milk in California. Best known for his work on viruses, including adenoviruses and CMV, which led to his hypothesis in 1969 for the existence of oncogenes in mammalian cells that might be disrupted by viral infections leading to cancer.
