His dissertation was a grammar of Kathlamet, previously known primarily from Franz Boas’s work at the end of the 19th century. He completed it in one year, productivity that was characteristic of him. He was 5 years at Harvard, 5 at UC Berkeley, Penn 1965-197?, U. Virginia.
