Scholten was together with Opzoomer the founder of the "moderne theologie" http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moderne_theologie The "moderne theologie" seeks to reconcile modern scientific developments with theological questions, in contrast to classical theology.
Scholten's student Kuyper supported this liberal theology during his study in Leiden, but rejected it later on in his career.
