Dr. Kakava moved to the Washington area in 1987 to study at Georgetown
University, where she received a master's degree in linguistics in 1989 and
a doctorate in 1993.

From 1990 to 1993, she taught English as a second language at Ohio State
University. After studying for a year at Princeton University on a
fellowship, she became a professor at Mary Washington in 1994.

Dr. Kakava was born in Halkida, Greece, and taught English there before
moving to the United States. As a scholar, one of her areas of focus was the conversational style of Greek speakers.
