First arrived at Brown in 1953 to get his PhD in American Civilization and stayed there (minus a brief stint as an assistant professor at Harvard) his whole career, retiring as George L. Littlefield Professor of American History in 2002. He died in 2005 at age 78. He supervised 25 dissertations.
