Master's advisor = Lee F. Braithwaite (BYU-Provo). Master's research conducted at the Friday Harbor Labs (U Washington) on the behavioral ecology and developmental biology of the marine snails Calliostoma ligatum and Margarites pupillus (MS 1986).

PhD advisor = Andrew Todd Newberry (UC Santa Cruz). Dissertation committee members = John Pearse (UCSC) and Craig M. Young (then at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Inst, FL). Dissertation topic: colony development, physical ecology, and reproductive biology of the compound ascidian Polyclinum planum (PhD 1992).
