Lewis entered the Graduate School of Yale University in the fall of 1910. His program of training was directed by Professor Lafayette B. Mendel, a man of remarkable charm, pedagogic skill, and research acumen. During his last two years at Yale, Lewis served as Professor Mendel's laboratory assistant.
He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1913.
