Professor Len MacGillivray obtained his PhD working for Jerry Atwood at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1998. He then spent several years working on the Functional Materials Program at the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences in Ottawa, Canada. In 2000 he moved to the University of Iowa to take up the position of Assistant Professor of Chemistry
