Gustav HELLMANN was born on July 3 in 1854, in Löwen, Silesia. He died on February 21 in 1939, in Berlin. He studied in Wroclaw (formerly Breslau), Berlin, and Göttingen. The desire to become a meteorologist was instilled in him by Heinrich Wilhelm DOVE (1803-1879), and from 1875 to the year in which the latter died, mourned in some quarters as "the father of nineteenth-century meteorology", HELLMANN went on what may be called a study tour. During part of those years he volunteered for Heinrich WILD (1833–1902), a Swiss physical climatologist, who was director of the Main Physical Observatory in St. Petersburg, then one of the foremost observatories in the world
