Though Armstrong's obituary in Nature (DOI: 10.1038/1451001a0 ) states Thorpe "... took a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry under Victor Meyer at Heidelberg," in his 1939 obituary of von Auwers (DOI: 10.1002/jctb.5000583604 ) Thorpe mentions, "Victor Meyer was a very busy man...he could not therefore include me among those who worked with him personally, but handed me over to Prof. von Auwers in order that I might carry out my 'arbeit' for the doctor's degree...I started to work with von Auwers in the autumn of 1893." Von Auwers was at the time außerordentlicher Professor in Victor Meyer's Institute (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Friedrich_von_Auwers)
