Walter E. Hartley attended Yale University (B.A. 1908, M.B. 1910) and later studied with Charles-Marie Widor in Paris. He served as organist at St. Mark's Protestant Cathedral in Grand Rapids Michigan, until joining the faculty of Pomona College in 1915. In 1926 he received a full-time appointment in Occidental College's department of music and directed the Glee Club. Howard Swan followed as director when Hartley retired in 1934.
