Dr. David Tapper, pediatric surgeon
By Warren King

Seattle Times medical reporter

In the challenging world of pediatric surgery, Dr. David Tapper was a major figure. As a surgeon, administrator and patients advocate, he was one who set examples.

"He was the guy whom pediatric surgeons all over the country would call and say, 'David, what do you think of this?' " said his longtime partner, Dr. Robert Sawin.

Dr. Tapper, surgeon in chief at Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center in Seattle for 18 years, died at his home Tuesday (July 23) after a three-year battle with kidney cancer. He was 57.

During his 18 years at Children's, Dr. Tapper built a small surgery department into a multispecialty program that is now known nationally for its expertise and residents training program.
