Alan Maxwell was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on October 21, 1926. He received the degrees of B.Sc. and M.Sc (Hons) in physics from the University of New Zealand, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of Manchester, Eng. From 1950- 1955, he did research work in radio astronomy at the Jodrell Bank Experimental Station of the University of Manchester, and, from 1952- 1955, also lectured in the Department of Physics.
