He was interested in the subject, but I don't think he knew a great deal about it. It was mostly Alvarez and Segrè and McMillan who sort of gave me the tutelage that I needed. Lawrence was officially the chairman of my thesis committee until I got almost ready to write the thesis. Then he said, I can't be, I'm out of town too much,
and so McMillan became the chairman
