Director, TIFR (1966 - 1971), Secretary to the Government of India (Electronics, Science & Technology, Defence Research, Environment) (1971- 1982); Director General of CSIR and DRDO; Member of the Planning Commission (1982-89); Chairman of the Science Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (1982-85); Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister of India (1986-89); Minister for Science & Technology in the Government of India and Vice President, CSIR.

Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics, UK (1997). Fellow and sometime President of all three Science Academies in India. Fellow of the Royal Society, London (FRS, 1970) and a Founding Fellow of TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World.
