Bio:

Christopher John Cannon was born on 13 December 1944 and died of cancer at the age of 39 on 15 August 1984. As a youth he showed promise of international standard as an athlete, principally long-distance running and javelin, but set aside these interests in order to study mathematics long-distance running and javelin, but set aside these interests in order to study mathematics at the Univ. of Sydney. He obtained First Class Honours in Applied Mathematics in 1965, and was awarded a PhD in 1970 jointly by the Universities of Sydney and Colorado. It was a the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (Boulder) in 1966 that he first met Richard N. Thomas with whom he was later to make very important contributions in a range of problems in theoretical astrophysics, especially the influences of atmospheric inhomogeneities and velocity fields on spectral line radiation transfer. From 1970 until the time of his death he played a key role in the Astrophysics Group of the Department of Applied Mathematics in the University of Sydney.
