Student of John Townsend, participant in war effort to develop radars in UK, chancelor of ANU and member of Australian Academy of Sciences, together with R W Crompton worte a classic book on Drift and Diffusion of electrons in gases, Wiley Interscience 1974. His students include Bob Crompton, Malcom Elford and others. Knighted for his contributions to science.
