After reading physics at Wadham, where he graduated in 1933, Rollin joined Simon’s low-temperature group. During the Second World War, he worked in the Clarendon Laboratory on microwave devices for use in radar. Subsequently, he was concerned with a variety of subjects involving very low temperatures and with the new field of nuclear magnetic resonance.
