Muir , who was awarded the Rhodes scholarship in 1938 , spent last year studying at Oxford University but was advised to come home due to the war in Europe . During the voyage home his ship was called to the rescue of a British freighter which had been torpedoed by a submarine . He witnessed the sinking of the submarine by a British plane . Mr. Muir will enter Ann Arbor February 1 where he will work on a doctorate in botany . He hopes that he may sometime return to Oxford for his remaining two years . this year
