After completing an undergraduate degree in Agronomy at Western Kentucky State College, Dr. Massengale obtained an MS and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He began as an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona, doing research on drought stress in forage crops. In 1976 he moved to the University of Nebraska, first serving as Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, later as Chancellor, and eventually as President of the University of Nebraska System.
