Pettenkofer, Max von, Ueber Mikania Guaco, Munich (1844) is available online at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. On page 11 Petttenkofer specifically acknowledges Prof. Buchner
German hygienist known for disbelief in bacterial causation of cholera. Famously, in support of his theories, in 1892 he drank a bottle of culture medium heavily growing the cholera bacillus (discovered by Robert Koch). He did not fall ill.
