Richard P. Paul received the Ph.D. in computer science in 1972 from Stanford University , Palo Alto , California . He was associated with research and engineering at Stanford University from 1963 to 1974 , during which time he developed the WAVE robot language and demonstrated the first use of programmable robots for assembly . In 1976 he joined the faculty of Purdue University , West Lafayette , Indiana , where he was a professor of electrical engineering and the Ransburg Professor of Robotics . In 1984 he joined the University of Pennsylvania , where he is currently Professor of Computer and Information Science
