Bio:

Wolf was born in Germany on the Polish border in 1930. He studied at European universities in Marburg, Innsbruck, Zurich, Paris and Frankfurt. In 1954 he emigrated to the United States to accept a fellowship at the University of Chicago from which he received his PhD in 1965. He taught at Chicago and Washington University (St. Louis) then found his intellectual home at NYU in 1971. During his career at NYU Wolf had visiting appointments at the International Institute for the Sociology of Law in Onati, Spain, the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and was the Max Weber Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, among others. He retired from NYU in 2003 and became Professor Emeritus.
