She was formerly Head of the Dietetics Program, National University of Malaysia. Her group’s research on cardiometabolic health is influencing Malaysia’s newest dietary guidelines and recommendations for fat consumption with contributions also to the Global Dietary Database. She has also contributed extensively to chronic kidney disease (CKD) research, both as an educator and nutrition expert. Dr. Karupaiah was the 2017 recipient of the Joel D Kopple Award from the National Kidney Foundation which annually honors an individual who has made significant contributions in renal nutrition. Her current research interests relate to CKD and the prevention of NCDs through food policy research. She is currently also working with the INFORMAS (International Network for Food and Obesity / non-communicable diseases Research, Monitoring and Action Support) network for capacity building in food environment projects involving Malaysia and 8 other Asian countries. Capacity building is also driving her involvement in the advanced Global Renal Internet Course for Dietitians (GRID) [https://education.kidney.org/content/global-renal-nutrition-course-dietitians] project supported by the National Kidney Foundation, which aims to overcome the global lack of expertise in renal dietitians by giving affordable access to LMICs’ dietitians.
