Botteron was born in Columbus, Ohio. He was raised in Wood River, Ill., and graduated from the University of Illinois (1936). He earned a doctorate in chemistry from Northwestern University. He was a professor of organic chemistry at Syracuse University from 1943 until retiring in 1981, when he moved to Portland. He was past president of the Geological Society of the Oregon Country and the Portland Astronomical Society (now Rose City Astronomers). In 1941, he married Elizabeth Louise Lamb.
