Arley T. Bever Jr., 69, a biochemist and retired official of the National Science Foundation, died March 22 at the Woodbine nursing center in Alexandria after a heart attack. He lived in Bethesda.
Dr. Bever came to the Washington area in 1963 and spent about the next four years as a research grants director with the National Institutes of Health. He then joined the NSF. In 1972, he became deputy director of the Foundation's experimental research and development incentives office. He retired for reasons of health in 1975.
He was recipient of the Foundation's Meritorious Service Award.
He was an elder of the North Chevy Chase Christian Church and had headed the community outreach committee. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemists and Sigma Xi, a science honor society.
