Eleftherios Economou obtained his Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens in 1963 and his PhD in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from the Univ. of Chicago (USA) in 1969. He was Professor at the Univ. of Virginia, USA (1970-1981), as well as Professor and Chair of Theoretical Physics at the Univ. of Athens, Greece (1978-1981) before he joined the Univ. of Crete in 1981, where he contributed to shape the restructuring of the University in general and the Department of Physics, in particular. He was among founders of of the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) and from 1983 until 2004 he served as the Director General and Chairman of the Governing Board of FORTH. He retired from the Univ. of Crete and was elected Emeritus Professor in 2007.
