William S. Kelley ’63
William is a retired molecular biologist who has been employed both in academia and in the biotechnology industry. After graduation from Haverford and subsequent graduate work in biochemistry and molecular biology at M.I.T. and Tufts, he spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Edinburgh and another postdoctoral year at Brandeis. From 1971–1980 he was a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University but left academic life in Pittsburgh in 1980 to join Biogen, one of the first biotechnology start-up companies that had been organized to implement DNA cloning technology. For the next thirty years he was active in a variety of managerial and consulting roles in early phase companies located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
