Born in Stavanger (part of Denmark-Norway at the time) in a family of German decent, at the age of fourteen he went with his parents to Copenhagen, where he studied theology and natural science. Studied at the University of Kiel, then Jena under Friedrich Schelling. He went to Freiberg in 1800, and there came under the influence of Abraham Gottlob Werner. He returned to Denmark in 1802. In 1804, he moved back to Germany and took up a professorship at the University of Halle. During the Battle of Leipzig (1813) he enlisted in the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant, and he was present at the capture of Paris the following year. He was professor of physics at Breslau from 1811 until 1832, when he accepted an invitation to Berlin.
