JULIAN ROSS FREDERICK , Professor of Mechanical Engineering retires from the University of Michigan at the end of the 1981-1982 academic year . He was associated very closely with the pioneering work in ultra - sonic technology and added many significant contributions to the field throughout his career . Professor Frederick was born in Sioux Fall , South Dakota in 1913. He obtained the bachelors degree and masters degree in Physics at lowa State University in 1935 and 1936. In 1948 he received the Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Michigan . He then spent three years as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Brown University . However , Professor Firestone attracted him back to the University of Michigan for some very important work in the transmission of acoustic waves in the ocean .
